Longwood Defeats Visiting Coppin State 13-2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University scored seven runs in the third inning en route to a 13-2 home baseball win past Coppin State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Friday evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (6-5) won their fourth-straight game against the Eagles (1-6) while led offensively by senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) with four hits and three runs scored, and sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) with a three-run home run, while senior captain Chris Briere|Midlothian (James River) earned the pitching win with 7.0 solid innings. Longwood and Coppin State will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 5, at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 12 p.m., instead of the originally-scheduled 1 p.m. start time.

Longwood fell behind 2-0 in the second inning as Coppin State got a solo home run from Jesse Savage (1-4, rbi) and a run-scoring single by Andrew Kiessling (1-2, rbi). The Lancers answered with a run in the second after junior Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-3) doubled and later scored on a ground-ball RBI by freshman Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-5, 2 rbi). Longwood took control in the third with seven runs as Lacy (1-4, 3 rbi) provided the big hit in the inning with his towering three-run home run to right field just left of the scoreboard. Junior D.J. Pomposini|Danville (George Washington) (2-4, 2 rbi) added a two-run single, classmate Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (2-5, 2 rbi) had a run-scoring single, and freshman Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) (0-5, rbi) contributed an RBI grounder as well.

Longwood added two more runs in the sixth inning when freshman Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (2-2, rbi) and Owens each hit run-scoring singles. The Lancers scored three additional runs in the seventh as Sollars had another RBI single, Jones (4-5) crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and junior Michael Sims|Stafford (North Stafford) (0-1, rbi) reached on an error that scored Sollars.

Briere (2-1) gained the Longwood pitching win with the first 7.0 innings on the mound, yielding just four hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Bobby Shelton|Forest (Jefferson Forest) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks as well.

Kiessling (0-2) started on the mound for Coppin State and took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs, nine earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.
