Longwood Falls On The Road At #29 VMI 14-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 14-1 baseball road decision at VMI of the Big South Conference Tuesday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington. The Lancers (13-13) were led by junior Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) with three hits against the Keydets (24-5) who are ranked #29 this week by Collegiate Baseball. Longwood will return home to play again on Thursday afternoon, April 8, hosting North Carolina Central University at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 2:30 p.m.. Admission is free to all home games at Bolding Stadium.

Longwood fell behind in the first inning and never recovered against nationally-ranked VMI. The Keydets scored three runs in the first, two runs in the second, one run in the third, three runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth, and two more runs in the seventh.

The Lancers scored their lone run in the fifth inning when Jones (3-4) doubled down the left field line to lead-off, and scored on a one-out RBI single to left by senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-4, RBI). Seniors Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3), Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-4), and Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-2) each had hits to extend their respective current hitting streaks to 11, six, and six, respectively.

Junior Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (3-4) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 4.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and nine runs, eight earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.

Alex Haitsuka (4-4, 3 RBI) had four hits and three RBI for VMI, including a two-run home run in the fifth, while Graham Sullivan (2-5, 4 RBI) added a three-run homer in the first for the Keydets. Jacob Morley (2-4, 3 RBI)?had a two-run homer in the second, and Cory Spangenberg (3-4, 2 RBI) had a solo homer in the sixth. Jeremy Brown (2-0) earned the pitching win for the Keydets with 3.1 scoreless innings, scattering five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
