FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team swept visiting Georgetown University 5-4 and 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. (Irvine) went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double for three RBI on Senior Day while classmate Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) drove in a pair of runs on two sacrifice flies. The Lancers wrap up their season next Saturday, May 1, when they travel to College Park, Maryland, for a doubleheader against the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference beginning at 1 p.m..

In the first game, the Lancers struck in the first inning when Ketsdever (1-2, 2 RBI) hit a two-run homerun to left field that scored freshman Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (1-2, RBI). Pitching took over and Longwood junior Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) worked out of several jams, forcing the Hoyas to strand five runners over the next four innings. Georgetown (16-27) pulled within one in the sixth inning but the Lancers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Short tripled to drive in junior Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (1-3) and then Short scored on a sacrifice fly by Betterton to put Longwood ahead 4-1. The Hoyas would not go quietly as they scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. Errors plagued the Lancers in the seventh inning as a drop in the outfield let the leadoff batter aboard. After a single by Mackensey Carter, Kristi Preuss hit a ball that was misplayed at second base and two runs scored as the ball went in to the outfield. The Hoyas scored the third run of the inning when Kelly Cianciotta, who was running for Preuss, scored when Demetria Cipriano grounded out to third base. The Lancers did not waste any time in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) (1-3) came to the plate with one out and hit a sharp line drive to the left field wall for a double. Nuckols (1-4, RBI) followed with a double to left-center to score Matthews and give Longwood the 5-4 victory.

Wells (30-9) pitched six innings and gave up one run on four hits with six strikeouts and six walks to earn the win. Freshman Ashley Cornell/Portsmouth (Churchland) pitched one hitless inning and gave up three unearned runs. Jennifer Connell (7-10) received the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

In the second game, the Hoyas grabbed the 1-0 lead in the first inning but Longwood answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Margadonna (1-4, RBI) drove in Nuckols (3-4, RBI) and then Margadonna came around to score on a double by Ketsdever (2-3, RBI). Ketsdever scored when Betterton hit a sacrifice fly. The Lancers scored again in the bottom of the second inning when Matthews walked and stole second and scored on a single by Nuckols. The Lancers added one more run in the bottom of the third inning when Short (2-3) scored on a two-out single by sophomore Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (2-3, 2 RBI) to put Longwood ahead 5-1. The Hoyas hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth inning to pull within 5-2. Longwood got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Short scored on another two-out Kramer single. Georgetown scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning but couldn't pull even as Longwood won 6-4.
