CLINTON, S.C. — Senior right-hander Maggie Chapin threw six strong innings, scattering seven hits and three runs and the Longwood softball team held on for a 4-3 win in the game of its Big South doubleheader at Presbyterian on Friday.
The Blue Hose bounced back to score eight unanswered runs over the final three innings in the second game for a split, winning, 8-2.
Coming off her first career no-hitter Sunday against USC Upstate, Chapin (10-9) was again sharp. She limited Presbyterian to just four hits and five walks with five strikeouts prior to the seventh inning. Presbyterian finally got to Chapin as Ava Coggins hit a two-run single to the left-center field gap with no one out to cut the Longwood lead in half at 4-2. After a walk to Avery Robinson put runners on first and second, Morgan Strickland relieved Chapin.
Strickland promptly hit the next two batters — Audrey Burton and Blair Darby — with pitches to force in a run and make it 4-3. From there, however, she buckled down, retiring Morgan Farthing with a strikeout, Cierra Grice on a fly ball to right field and induced Jessica Wilson to hit into a fielder's choice, as the Lancers escaped with the win.
Strickland earned her second save, sending Presbyterian to its sixth consecutive loss to that point.
"Pleased with the fight in the first game," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Conference is always a fight. Have to make good adjustments for tomorrow."
Longwood (17-25, 4-4 Big South) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Sophia Knock and Maggie Hiatt came up with consecutive RBI doubles with one out and Bailey Bucholz reached on a two-out throwing error that plated pinch-runner Jillian Brunton.
Bucholz added an RBI single through the left side in the fifth, extending the lead to 4-0.
Seven different Longwood players notched hits with doubles by Avery Miller, Knock and Hiatt. Bucholz drove in a team-leading two runs.Â
Robinson (5-6) went the distance in the circle for Presbyterian, surrendering seven hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out seven.
Longwood scored first in the second game, plating single runs in the third and fourth innings on a Bennett double inside the third-base bag and Ava Abromavage infield single to shortstop, respectively.
Presbyterian (14-23, 3-5) scored three times in the bottom of the fourth and five more runs in the sixth off of Cierra Gawryluk (3-7) and Strickland.
Baxleigh Arnette's sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth gave PC a 4-3 edge, which was lengthened on a Coggins RBI single, Duke bases-loaded walk and Burton two-run single to left, all in the sixth inning.Â
Abromavage paced the Longwood offense with a 3-for-3 effort in the second game, adding an RBI and run scored.
Saturday's rubber match has been moved up to 11 a.m., to beat weather in the area. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
