FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 11-4 baseball victory past visiting Old Dominion University of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tuesday evening at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (11-11) were led against the Monarchs (12-16) by senior
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) with three hits and three RBI, and sophomore
Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) who hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Longwood will remain at home to play again on Wednesday afternoon, March 31, hosting James Madison University, also of the CAA, at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m..
Longwood fell behind early as Old Dominion scored a run in the first inning and led 1-0 before the Lancers scored five runs in the third inning and never trailed again. LU did allow a run the fourth, and two more runs in the fifth as the Monarchs closed to within 5-4. The hosts, however, responded with two runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh, and three more runs in the eighth en route to the seven-run margin of victory past ODU.

Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (3-3) earned the pitching win for Longwood with the first 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior
Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, yielding no hits with four strikeouts and no walks, and sophomore
Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning for the Lancers, yielding no hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Chris Baker (2-4, 2 RBI) had two hits and two RBI for Old Dominion, including a double, while Donnie Corsner (2-5, RBI) and Austin McGowan (2-5)?each had two hits as well. Brandon Smith (2-3) took the pitching loss for the Monarchs with the first 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.
