RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 10-4 baseball decision on the road at VCU of the Colonial Athletic Association Wednesday night at The Diamond in Richmond. The Lancers (9-9) received home runs from senior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) and sophomore
Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) but it was not enough against the host Rams (10-10). Longwood will play again this weekend, March 27-28, hosting Le Moyne College for a three-game series at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning on Saturday, March 27, with a doubleheader at 1 p.m..
Longwood was looking for the season sweep at VCU after taking a 6-0 shutout victory past the visiting Rams just one week ago in Farmville. VCU, however, jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning before adding two runs in the third and three more runs in the fifth to lead 6-2 through five innings. The Lancers scored two runs in the sixth to close to within 6-4 but the hosts pushed two more runs across the plate in both the seventh and eighth innings for the final six-run margin of victory while avenging last week's outcome.
Newman (2-3, 2 RBI) hit his team-leading fourth home run this year in the third, a solo shot, adding an RBI double in the fifth. Kimble (1-5, RBI) extended his team-leading hitting streak to its current 11 games with a lead-off solo home run in the sixth, while senior
David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-4, RBI) contributed an RBI single in the sixth. Classmate
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) also two hits. Junior
Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (2-3) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and three walks.
VCU was led by Brent Mikionis (4-5, RBI) with four hits, including an RBI single in the third, and Paul Nice (2-5) added two hits. John Lenherr (1-3, RBI) and Matt Leskiw (1-3, RBI) each had run-scoring singles. The Rams were aided by two runs scored on wild pitches and another scored on a passed ball while an error allowed yet another run across the plate. Michael Graham (3-2) earned the mound win for VCU while pitching the first 5.0 innings and giving-up just three hits and two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.
