ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Longwood University softball team defeated Providence College of the Big East Conference 9-1 in five innings on Sunday in Rock Hill, South Carolina for its fifth--straight win. The second game of the day against USC Upstate was cancelled due to a lack of playable fields due to rain. The Lancers (14-7) were led by senior

Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in five innings in the circle and was named to the All-Tournament team. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, March 17, when they face James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association in Harrisonburg.

Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (1-3, HR) scored the fifth run of the inning when she scored on a groundout by
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run). Providence got one run back in the top of the fourth inning when Jenna Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored one run. Longwood answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ketsdever hit a leadoff home run to put Longwood ahead 6-1. Freshman
Jordan Cox/Springfield (Robert E. Lee) scored when sophomore
Brittney Latka/Purcellville (Loudon Valley) hit a grounder to the second baseman who couldn't make the play. Junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (1-2, RBI) walked with the bases loaded to push another run across and freshman
Kellie Bridgeman/Dinwiddie (Dinwiddie) (1-1, RBI) singled, driving in
Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) (2-2, 2 runs) to put Longwood ahead 9-1. The game was stopped after the Lancers went ahead by eight runs in the fifth inning.
Wells (13-3) gave up three hits, two of them in the fourth inning, and allowed one run, dropping her ERA to 1.79. She struck out two batters with no walks.
Danielle Bertolette (1-4) received the loss for the Friars, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits while walking six batters in 4 1/3 innings.
