Longwood Tops Morehead State And Quinnipiac

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Longwood University softball team won a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, defeating Morehead State University 8-0 and Quinnipiac University 6-5. Freshman Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) went 4-for-8 with three extra-base hits, four RBI and scored four runs. Senior Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up the win in both games, pitching a seven-inning, three-hit shutout against Morehead State. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, February 27, when they host a doubleheader with Saint Joseph's University at Lancer Field in Farmville at 12 p.m..

In the game with Morehead State, the Lancers jumped out to a 1-0 in the third inning when Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J.?(Wall Township) scored on a single by Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry). The Lancers added three more runs in the fourth inning. Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) drove in two of those runs with a single to left field. Longwood tacked on four runs in the sixth inning on two two-run home runs, one by Short and the other by Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County). Wells pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

In the game against Quinnipiac, the Bobcats struck first the a five-run third inning. The Lancers answered with five runs in the third inning, including two on a RBI double by Short. Short came around to score on a single by Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory). Simmons and Courtney Long/Mechanicsville?(Hanover) also scored in the inning to tie the game at 5-5. In the seventh inning, Short led off with a triple. Two batters later, Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) singled and Short scored, giving the Lancers a 7-6 win. Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) started in the circle and went five innings, giving up five runs, three of them earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Wells came in and pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit.

Betterton went 3-for-5 on the day with three RBI and one home run. Matthews went 2-for-5 with three RBI while Nuckols went 4-for-7 with one RBI.
