Longwood Drops 85-40 Decision To Maryland

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball dropped an 85-40 decision to the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sunday afternoon in Farmville. Sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) led Longwood (5-17) with 17 points and five rebounds. Maryland (16-6) had four players score in double-figures, led by Kim Rodgers with 15 points. The game was selected for the NCAA “Pack The House Challenge” and a season-high 831 fans turned out for the matchup. The Lancers return to action on Wednesday, February 10, when they host Troy University at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall on campus in Farmville. The game is the WBCA “Pink Zone” game with a portion of the proceeds going to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Longwood fell behind 11-1 less than three minutes into the game after Maryland's Rodgers came out on fire, hitting her first three three-point attempts and Lynetta Kizer adding a jumper. Maryland extended the lead to 44-24 at halftime. The Terrapins came out firing in the second half, opening the period on a 20-2 run over the first 7:29 before Billups hit a layup to make the score 64-28. The lead grew to 47 with 1:00 left at 85-38. Longwood scored to make the final 85-40.

Longwood was led by Billups with 17 points (7-16 FG) and freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) with six points (2-12 FG) and three steals. The Lancers shot 26.2% (16-61) from the floor, including 7.7% (1-13) from behind the arc, and 58.3% (7-12) from the foul line. Longwood turned the ball over 19 times grabbed 30 rebounds.

Maryland was led by Rodgers with 15 points (5-6 3FG) and Kizer with 13 points. Lori Bjork added 12 points and Jackie Nared posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Maryland shot 54.8% (34-62) from the floor, including 55.6% (10-18) from behind the arc, and 43.8% (7-16) from the foul line. Dara Taylor dished out eight assists for Maryland who had 20 assists and 20 turnovers. The Terrapins grabbed 51 rebounds, including 16 on the offensive end that they turned in to 20 points. They also turned Longwood's 19 turnovers into 25 points.
