LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University men's cross country totaled 38 points to finish third among three teams Friday evening at the season-opening VMI Relays in Lexington at the Virginia Horse Center. VCU took first place with 10 points, while the host Keydets placed second with 11 points. The Lancers will compete again on Saturday, September 12, at the James Madison Invitational in New Market near Harrisonburg.
In Lexington, the non-traditional relay race included groups of two runners completing two legs of two miles each for four miles total. Longwood was led by sophomore
Darren Simpson/Crewe (FUMA) and freshman
Sean Flynn/Goodview (Roanoke Catholic) who finished eighth with their combined time of 42:51. They were followed by junior
Phil Kada/Arlington (Yorktown) and sophomore
Justin Cooke/Chesterfield (Manchester) (45:51, 14th), along with senior
Gerard Shaber/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and sophomore
Robert Webb/Williamsburg (Lafayette) (46:00, 16th). Sophomore
Alex Strittmater/Haymarket (Battlefield) (22:44) also competed for the Lancers.
