PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday in Princess Anne, Maryland. The Lancers (23-17) won game one by a score of 8-5 before taking game two by a score of 13-0 against the Fighting Hawks (11-37). Longwood and UMES will play another doubleheader on Sunday, May 3, beginning at 12 p.m. to complete the four-game weekend series.
In the opener, junior
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, 3 RBI) led Longwood with two hits and three RBI, including a pair of doubles, while senior
Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, 2RBI) added two hits and two RBI with a sacrifice fly as well. Senior
John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (5-4) earned the pitching win with the complete-game, 9.0 inning effort on the mound, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Cerreto (4-4, 3 RBI) had four hits and three RBI with a home run and a double for the Lancers, while juniors
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (4-4) and
Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (3-4, 2 RBI) added four and three hits, respectively, as Havers hit a home run as well. Quigley (1-5, 2 RBI) also hit a home run for Longwood. Sophomore
Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (3-1) picked-up the pitching win with the compete-game, 7.0 innings on the mound, scattering seven hits and no walks with seven strikeouts.
