Longwood Sweeps North Carolina Central; Lancers Win 15-1, 6-5

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting North Carolina Central University Thursday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 15-1 and the second game 6-5.  Junior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) had two hits and four RBI to lead the hosts in the opener, while classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) collected three hits in the nightcap.  The Lancers improved to 19-10 overall with five wins in their last six games, while the Eagles dropped to 4-19 overall.  Longwood will play a three-game series on the road this weekend, April 10-11, at Furman University of the Southern Conference in Greenville, South Carolina beginning with a game on Friday (4.10) at 4 p.m..
   
In the opener, Longwood scored 15 runs on 15 hits with six runs in the first inning, one run in the second, seven runs in the third and one run in the fourth.  North Carolina Central avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh inning.  In the first, the Lancers received RBI from Cerreto (1-3, 2 RBI) on a ground ball, Smiy (2-3, 4 RBI) on a single, freshman Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-3, 3 BI) on a two-run double, classmate Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (0-2, RBI) on a sacrifice fly, and freshman Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (2-3, RBI) on a single.  In the second, Cerreto led-off with a solo home run to left field.  In the third, driving in runs were junior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-5, RBI) with a single, junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (3-4, 3 RBI) with a two-run double, Smiy with a three-run double, and Newman with another RBI double.  Havers had an RBI single in the fourth.
   
Sophomore Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (2-0) earned the complete-game pitching win for Longwood with the 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and one earned run with no walks and five strikeouts.  Justin Goodson (1-3, RBI) had an RBI single in the seventh for N.C. Central, while Jeff Citero (1-5) took the loss, allowing six hits and six earned runs with one walk and one strikeout over the first 1.0 inning.
   
In the nightcap, Longwood trailed 2-1 after one inning, 4-2 through three, and 5-3 after four innings before scoring two runs in the fifth to tie it at 5-5.  The Lancers scored the game-winner in the sixth inning to gain the two-game sweep.  In the first, sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI single to score Kimble (2-4, RBI) who had led-off with an infield single before stealing second base.  In the third, Cerreto (3-4) reached on a throwing error, advanced two bases on two wild pitches, and scored unearned on a fielding error.  In the fourth, Kimble had an RBI double, while in the fifth, Cerreto singled to lead-off before later scoring on another wild pitch.  Sollars (0-2, RBI) also collected an RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk to score Havers (1-3) who had singled.  Smiy (1-3, RBI) provided the game-winning run with his RBI single that scored Cerreto who had singled with one out in the inning.
   
Junior Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (3-4) earned the pitching win with the final 2.0 scoreless innings on the mound, allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.  Gwaltney pitched 2.1 innings of middle relief, allowing four hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.  David Scott (3-4, RBI) had three hits and an RBI, and Oliver Jenkins (2-3) had two hits and three runs to lead the Eagles.  James Jordan (0-2) took the pitching loss with 1.1 innings of relief, yielding one hit and one earned run with two walks and one strikeout.
