Longwood Splits At Norfolk State; Lancers Win 5-0 Before Falling 5-4

NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader at Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Wednesday afternoon in Norfolk, winning the first game 5-0 before dropping the second game 5-4.  Senior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the opener for the Lancers who are now 17-10 overall while the Spartans are now 8-13 overall.  Longwood is scheduled to play again on Thursday, April 9, hosting reclassifying independent North Carolina Central University for a doubleheader at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 12 p.m..
   
In the opener, Longwood scored a run in the second inning on an RBI single from freshman Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-3, RBI).  The Lancers added three runs in the fifth behind an RBI double by sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-4, RBI) and an RBI single by junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-4, RBI) along with an unearned run aided by a throwing error.  The visitors final run was scored by junior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (0-2) who drew a lead-off walk and later crossed the plate during a run-down play between first and second base.
   
Walker (4-1) took care of the rest for Longwood with his complete-game, shutout effort on the mound, yielding just three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.  John Lynch (2-3) had two of the hits for Norfolk State, and Horace Smith (0-2) took the pitching loss with 4.2 innings while allowing six hits, three earned runs and three walks with two strikeouts.
   
In the nightcap, Longwood scored a run in the first when junior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-3) drew a lead-off walk and scored on an RBI single by classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4, 2RBI).  The Lancers added two runs in the third on another RBI single from Cerreto and Jones (2-4) crossed the plate via a throwing error.  In the fifth, Havers (1-3, RBI) hit a two-out, solo home run down the right field line for this third homer this season.
   
Norfolk State scored two runs in the second on an RBI single from Jerrod Farley (2-3, 2 RBI) and an RBI double by Drew Suttmiller (1-3, RBI).  The Spartans added a run in the fourth when Farley hit a one-out solo home run to right field, and the hosts took the lead with two more runs in the fifth after an RBI single from Anselmo Cantu (1-3, RBI) and a sacrifice fly by Jermaine Berry (0-1, RBI).  Ryan Davis (1-2) earned the pitching win with 2.0 innings of middle relief, allowing three hits and one earned run with one walk and no strikeouts.
   
Sophomore Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (3-2) took the mound loss for Longwood with 3.0 innings of relief, allowing three hits and three earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts.  Smiy (2-2) also had two hits in the day's second game for the Lancers.
