SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader on the road at fellow Independent Le Moyne College Saturday in Syracuse, New York, falling 3-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two. The Lancers dropped to 21-15, while the Dolphins improved to 14-17. Longwood and Le Moyne will conclude their four-game weekend series in upstate New York on Sunday, April 19, beginning at 12 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood scored a run in the first inning on a two-out, solo home run to right-center field by junior
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, 2 RBI). Le Moyne tied it at 1-1 with a run in the second before the Lancers scored again in the third on an RBI single from Cerreto. The Dolphins again forged a tie at 2-2 with a run in the third as well, and the hosts scored what proved to be the game-winner in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-5) also had two hits for the visitors.
Senior
John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (4-3) took the hard-luck mound loss, yielding seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts over the 8.0 innings. Chris Edmondson (2-3, RBI) led Le Moyne with two hits and an RBI, while Sean Paino (1-2, 2 RBI) added two RBI. Cory Nelson (3-4) earned the pitching win for the Dolphins with the first 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs with five walks and seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood again scored in the opening inning -- this time on an RBI single by junior
Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-4, RBI). Likewise, Le Moyne again tied it at 1-1 with a run in the second before the Lancers scored two runs in the third after sophomore
Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (0-1) walked and later scored unearned due to a fielding error while senior
Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI double. The Dolphins scored three runs in the third to lead 4-3 but LU battled back with two runs in the sixth to lead 5-4 via a two-out, two-run double to left-center field by Jones (2-3, 2 RBI). Unfortunately, LC scored two runs in the sixth as well for its second one-run victory of the day.
Junior
Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (4-5) took the mound loss, yielding three hits and two earned runs with one walk and no strikeouts over the final 1.0 inning. Also pitching for Longwood were senior
Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) [2.1-ip, 4-h, 3-er, 1-bb, 3-k] and freshman
Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) [2.2-ip, 3-h, 1-er, 0-bb, 5-k].
Paino (3-3, RBI) led Le Moyne with three hits and an RBI, Don Schaaf (1-2, 2 RBI) added two RBI, while Matt Marra (2-3, RBI) and Brett Botsford (2-4) each collected two hits. Luke Nellis (2-3) earned the pitching win for the Dolphins with one-third of an inning of relief, allowing one hit and one earned run with two walks and no strikeouts.
