Longwood Splits Doubleheader At Furman; Lancers Win 13-8 (11), Fall 10-4

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader at Furman University of the Southern Conference Saturday afternoon in South Carolina, winning the second game 13-8 in 11 innings after dropping the first game 10-4.  Senior Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) had four hits, including the game-winning RBI double in the extra 11th inning of the nightcap for the Lancers who are now 20-11 overall while the Paladins are now 14-18 overall.  Longwood, with its 28th overall 20-win campaign in the 33-year history of the program, is scheduled to play again on Tuesday, April 14, at Radford University of the Big South Conference beginning at 3 p.m..
   
In the nightcap, Longwood pounded 20 hits and scored five runs in the decisive 11th inning for the road victory.  The Lancers scored two runs in the third to lead 2-0 before Furman tied it at 2-2 with two runs in the fourth.  It was 3-3 after each team scored a run in the fifth before LU added two runs in the sixth only to see the Paladins score three runs in the sixth to lead 6-5.  Longwood tied it at 6-6 with a run in the seventh, and took a 7-6 lead into the ninth with a run in the eighth before the hosts scored in the ninth to force extra innings tied at 7-7.  Each team scored a run in the 10th before the Lancers earned the win with their five-run 11th inning.
   
Junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-6) opened the 11th with a double, and Quigley (4-6, RBI) promptly followed with his run-scoring double that proved to be the game-winner.  Freshman Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (1-1, 2 RBI) added a two-run home run in the inning, while classmate Richie Palase/Staten Island, N.Y. (Moore Catholic) (1-3, RBI) added an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch.  In the 10th, sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-5, RBI) had hit a two-out solo home run to left field that briefly looked like it could have decided the game.
   
Junior Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (4-4) earned the pitching win with the final 6.0 innings on the mound, scattering nine hits and four earned runs with three walks and six strikeouts.  Will Miller (4-5, 2 RBI) led Furman with four hits and two RBI, while Marcus Rose (3-6, RBI) added three hits, including a solo home run.
   
In the opener, Furman led 1-0 after one inning, 2-1 after two, 5-2 after three, 6-3 after five, 9-3 after six, and 10-3 after seven innings before a Longwood run in the eighth provided the final 10-4 margin.  The host Paladins had 17 hits while led by Rose (4-5, 2 RBI) with four hits and two RBI, including a solo home run, and Connor Lind (3-4, RBI) with three hits and an RBI.  Rob Fondu (1-4, 2 RBI) added a two-run single for Furman, while Ian Parry (3-3) earned the pitching win with the first 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.
   
Longwood scored in the second when Havers (2-4, RBI) led-off the inning with an opposite-field solo home run to left field.  In the third, Jones (1-5, RBI) opened the inning with a solo home run to left field.  In the fifth, junior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-5, RBI) had an RBI double, while in the eighth, Sollars (1-4, RBI) had an RBI single.  Senior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (4-2) took the mound loss for the Lancers, yielding nine hits and five earned runs with one walk and one strikeout over the first 2.1 innings.
