FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Saint Peter's College Saturday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the second game 18-3 after dropping the first game 14-10 in 11 innings. Sophomore
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (7-10, 4 RBI) collected seven hits on the day, while juniors
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (6-8, 5 RBI) and
Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (3-8, 5 RBI) each had five RBI for the Lancers who are now 5-6. Kevin Madison (5-8, 6 RBI) posted five hits and six RBI on the afternoon for the Peacocks who are now 2-8. Longwood and Saint Peter's will play another doubleheader on Sunday, March 8, at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 12 p.m..
In the nightcap, Longwood spotted Saint Peter's two runs in the first inning before scoring seven runs in the second, two runs in the fourth, and nine runs in the fifth of the seven-inning contest. In the second, the Lancers' runs were all unearned following a two-out throwing error. Havers (2-4, 3 RBI) hit his first home run of the season during the at-bat, a towering two-run blast to right-center field, while Jones (3-4, 3 RBI) added a two-run double down the left field line. In the fifth, Cerreto (3-3, 3 RBI) had a pair of RBI singles, while junior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (3-4, RBI), Jones (3-4, 3 RBI), along with freshmen
Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-4, RBI) and
Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (2-4, 2 RBI) each had RBI singles. Classmate
Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (1-4, RBI) added an RBI double, while Havers had a sacrifice fly. Junior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-5, RBI) also added three hits in the game as the Lancers posted 19 hits in the second game.
Freshman
Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-0) picked-up the pitching win with the final 4.0 innings on the mound, scattering three hits and one earned run with two walks and four strikeouts. Senior
Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) had tossed the first 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Madison (2-2, RBI) and Justyn Carter (2-3)?each had two hits for Saint Peter's, while Ethan Jackson (0-3) took the pitching loss with the first 3.0 innings, yielding eight hits and nine unearned runs with one walk and one strikeout.
In the opener, Longwood led 7-0 through four innings, and 8-5 after seven before Saint Peter's scored two runs in the eighth and tied it at 8-8 with another run in the ninth inning. Each team pushed across two runs in the 10th before the Peacocks took the win with four runs in the 11th inning. The Lancers had opened with three runs in the first on RBI singles from Cerreto (3-5, 2 RBI) and senior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-6, 2 RBI), as well as an RBI double by Smiy (3-6, RBI). Jones (4-6, RBI) had an RBI triple down the left field line in the second, and Havers (1-4, 2 RBI) contributed a sac fly in the fourth, and an RBI single in the 10th inning as the hosts put 20 hits on the scoreboard.
Junior
Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (0-3) took the mound loss with 4.2 innings of relief, allowing nine hits and eight runs-four earned, with four walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore
Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) had pitched the first 5.0 innings, scattering six hits and five runs-four earned, with four walks and three strikeouts. Brian Koster (4-6, 3 RBI) and Madison (3-6, 4 RBI) led Saint Peter's who had 18 hits in the game, while Joe Jemenez (1-0) got the pitching win with an inning of relief, yielding three hits and two earned runs.
