Longwood Splits Doubleheader With Georgetown; Win 5-4, Fall 6-5

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University split a pair of softball games against Georgetown University, winning the nightcap 5-4 after dropping the first game 6-5 on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one home run to lead the Lancers. Longwood moves to 11-14 while Georgetown is now 6-22 on the season. The Lancers return to action on Thursday, April 2, when they travel to Norfolk for a doubleheader with Norfolk State University at 4 p.m.

The Lancers struck first in the second game, with Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) scoring on an Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) double in the top of the second inning, giving Longwood a 1-0 lead. Georgetown pulled ahead with a three-run fifth inning. Kristi Preuss hit a two-run home run and Samantha Peters added a solo shot in the frame to put the Hoyas up 3-1. Longwood answered with a four-run sixth inning. Radford hit a three-run home run with Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) and Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) scoring on the play. Lashunda Davis/Natalie, Va. (Halifax County) scored the final run of the inning on a Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) groundout, giving the Lancers a 5-3 lead. Georgetown would score one run in the sixth inning but could not pull even, with Longwood winning 5-4. Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) gave up four runs on six hits while striking out nine in the win, improving to 2-2 on the season.

Longwood fell behind early in the first game with Georgetown scoring three runs in the first inning. The Lancers answered in the top of the second inning when Long hit a leadoff home run to left field. Radford walked and advanced to second on a Margadonna sacrifice bunt. Betterton hit a two-run home run to left center field, scoring Radford. Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) singled down the left field line, advanced to second after Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake, Va. (Hickory) was hit by a pitch, stole third and scored when sophomore Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield) reached on an error by the shortstop, giving the Lancers a 4-3 lead after 1 1/2 innings. Georgetown tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning. Longwood started the sixth inning with a Long walk. Radford followed with a single to left field. Long advanced to third when Margadonna hit into a fielder's choice, with Radford out on the play. Long scored on a Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) single to give Longwood a 5-4 lead. Georgetown struck with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Mackensey Carter hit a two-run walk-off home run to give Georgetown the 6-5 win. Wells gave up six runs and struck out five in 6.2 innings in the loss, falling to 9-12 on the season.

Betterton went 2-for-6 on the day with a double and a home run, driving in three runs.
