Longwood Tops Providence 5-4 And UC Riverside 5-0

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Longwood University swept a pair of softball games at the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Saturday, defeating Providence 5-4 and topping host UC Riverside 5-0. Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up both wins after giving up only four runs in two games. Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) hit a home run in each game while going 4-for-6 from the plate with four RBI. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when it faces Fordham and North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In the first game Longwood struck in the first inning on a Ketsdever home run to right center, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Providence scored twice in the second inning but Longwood answered with three runs in the bottom-half of the second to go ahead 4-2 after two innings. Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) singled, scoring Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield). A Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen, Va. (Patrick Henry) single scored Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township), then Ashley Kramer/Ashburn, Va. (Broad Run) singled to score Brittany Matthews/Farmville, Va. (Prince Edward) who was running for Radford. Providence got one run back in the third and another back in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Nuckols started the seventh inning with a triple to left-center. Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake, Va. (Hickory) fouled out and then Kramer flied out to right field, scoring Nuckols and giving Longwood the 5-4 win. Wells pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out four.

Wells' work was far from done as the sophomore pitched a four-hit shutout in the second game, a 5-0 win over UC Riverside. Longwood scored one run in the top of the second inning when Simmons hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Wells who had reached on a single. The Lancers held a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when they added to their lead. Simmons started the inning with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a Kramer single. Ketsdever hit a three-run home run, her second homer of the day. Courtney Long/Mechanicsville, Va. (Hanover) was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. She advanced to third on a Nelson groundout and scored on a Wells single.

Wells pitched 14 innings on Saturday, giving up four runs on 10 hits while striking out 12 and walking only four. Wells finished with a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend, evening her record at 8-8 for the year.

Ketsdever went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI on Saturday. Long went 2-for-3 with one walk and was hit by two pitches.
