BALTIMORE, Md. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader at Coppin State University Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, winning the first game 5-1 and the second game 10-4. Sophomore
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) [2-4, 3 RBI) had two hits and three RBI on the day to lead the Lancers who improved to 12-6 overall with eight-straight wins. Lonnel Bush [2-4, RBI] had two hits and an RBI for the Eagles (0-7). Longwood and Coppin State will play their weekend series finale on Sunday, March 15, in Baltimore, Maryland beginning at 1 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood scored a run in the first inning as junior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-2) drew a lead-off walk and later scored on an RBI single from classmate
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3, RBI). Coppin State tied it at 1-1 with a run in the first as well before the Lancers took control with three runs in the fifth courtesy a throwing error, wild pitch, and another run scored during a run-down play. Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (3-0) earned the pitching win with the final 6.0 scoreless innings of relief on the mound, allowing just one hit with two walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored three runs in the first inning, four runs in the second, and two more runs in the third to lead 9-0 before the Eagles scored two runs in the third inning. CSU added two more runs in the fourth while LU scored a final run in the fifth inning for the final margin. In the first, all three runs crossed the plate on wild pitches.
