RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Longwood University split a pair of softball games at the Amy S. Harrison Classic, defeating Providence College 6-0 in the first game and falling to host UC Riverside 14-6 in five innings in the second game on Friday in Riverside, Calif. Longwood moves to 7-10 on the season while Providence falls to 3-13 and UC Riverside improves to 8-16. Junior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount, Va. (Franklin County) went 4-for-7 on the day with five RBI and one home run, a grand slam. The Lancers return to action on Saturday when they face Providence at noon ET and UC Riverside at 5 p.m. ET.
In the first game, Longwood started the scoring in the second inning with a
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville, Va. (Hanover) leadoff walk. Long, a freshman, stole second base and then scored on a Betterton RBI single. Sophomore
Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield) doubled to left field, driving home Betterton. Sophomore
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) was hit by a pitch and then sophomore
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen, Va. (Patrick Henry) singled up the middle, scoring Nelson. Freshman
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn, Va. (Broad Run) hit into a double play to end the inning. The Lancers took a 3-0 lead that they built on in the sixth inning. Margadonna hit a leadoff home run to left center field. Nuckols singled, stole second and advanced to third on a Kramer groundout. Junior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) singled through the left side, scoring Nuckols. Ketsdever scored on a Long triple giving Longwood a 6-0 lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched seven shutout innings for the Lancers, giving up only three hits and striking out four, improving to 6-8 on the season.
Longwood fell behind early in the second game with UCR scoring two runs in the first, six in the second and four in the third, putting the Lancers down 12-0 after 2 1/2 innings. The Lancers got four of the runs back in the bottom of the third on Betterton's grand slam, her first of the season. Long, Kramer and Sophomore
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake, Va. (Hickory) all scored on the play. UCR added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and Longwood answered with two of its own in the bottom half of the frame, both runs coming on a Nelson single. Sophomore
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach, Va. (First Colonial) received the loss in the second game, dropping her record to 1-2. Spencer gave up 14 runs, 13 earned, on 10 hits while walking five and striking out four in five innings of work.
Betterton went 4-for-7 with a home run and five RBI in the two games.
Nichole Simmons went 3-for-6 with a double and
Tricia Nelson went 3-for-7, driving in three runs.
Brittany Keeney led UCR, going 4-for-4 with two triples, one double and one home run, driving in six runs and scoring four herself. Mary Rose Sheehy went 2-for-2 to lead Providence.
