Longwood Defeats Old Dominion 8-2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 8-2 baseball victory past visiting Old Dominion University Wednesday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers improved to 3-3 on the young season as freshman Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-3, 3 RBI) collected two hits and three RBI, while junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (3-4, RBI) had three hits and an RBI.  The Monarchs dropped to 2-4 while led at the plate by Josh Wright (1-3, RBI with a hit and an RBI.  Longwood will play again this weekend, February 28-March 1, hosting Le Moyne University for a three-game weekend series at Lancer Stadium in Farmville -- beginning on Friday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m..

Longwood spotted Old Dominion two unearned runs in the second inning as a two-out throwing error led to the runs but quickly scored two runs in the bottom of the second to tie it at 2-2.  The Lancers added single runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to secure the home win.  In the second, Newman got it started with a two-run single down the left field line.  In the fourth, Newman again came through with an RBI double to left field as well; while in the fifth, Havers singled through the right side to drive in a run.

In the four-run sixth inning, junior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-5, 2 RBI) blasted a two-run double down the left field line as well.  Also driving in runs in the frame were junior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-3, RBI) with an RBI double and freshman Richie Palase/Staten Island, N.Y. (Moore Catholic) (1-2, RBI) with an RBI single.

Longwood senior right-handed pitcher John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (1-0) earned his first win of the campaign with a complete-game, 9.0-inning effort on the mound with five strikeouts and no walks allowed -- scattering seven hits and the two unearned runs.
