BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team (2-4) defeated conference rival Davidson (2-3) on Friday evening at the Athletics complex, 5-2. Senior Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) scored her first hat-trick, three goals, of the season in route to the Lancer victory. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, September 14 hosting Towson at 1 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.

“It's always huge when you beat a conference opponent,” said head coach Iain Byers. “Davidson got the better of us last season, so we wanted to come out stronger this season. I?can't say enough how proud I?am of our girls - they play their hearts out every game.”

The Lancers came out firing, as Binnewies gave her side an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The goal came after the team earned a penalty corner which was put in by sophomore Lauren Van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) and stopped by freshman Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener-von-Siemens-Gymnasium). Just four minutes later the Wildcats would tie things 1-1, after a ball put in off a penalty corner hung around the box.

Binnewies would regain the Lancer lead in the 35th minute, scoring off another penalty corner assisted by Van de Kamp and Knop. Longwood headed into the locker room with a 2-1 advantage in score, but also with the advantage in shots (8-5) and penalty corners (6-3).

“We stepped up as a team,” said junior Jessie Mantel/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne), who was voted player of the game. “Our confidence just kept growing, especially after we scored goals number two and three. The entire team played well and this was truly a team win.”

Senior Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) added to the Lancer lead in the 43rd minute, dribbling past the Wildcat defense and burying the ball in the goal. Three minutes later Binnewies would cap off her three goal performance by taking a shot that beat the Davidson keeper and found its way into the netting.

The Lancers offensive charge would carry on into the 47th minute as Van de Kamp added a goal of her own to go with her two assists. Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Muary) set up Van de Kamp by beating the Wildcat defense and passing the ball to her teammate, who was set up on the near post.

Davidson did not back down, scoring their second goal of the game in the 64th minute. Despite the late goal, it would not be enough to rally past the Lancers.

Senior goalkeeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) played 62 minutes for the Lancers allowing one goal and making three saves. Sophomore keeper Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) made her first appearance of the season, making three big saves for the Lancers.
