BOX SCORE
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Longwood University men's soccer team (2-1-1) endured 90 minutes of regulation and double overtime on Wednesday night, during a 0-0 tie at High Point (1-1-1). Freshman goalkeeper
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) had the night of his life, playing all 110 minutes in between the pipes for the Lancers. Longwood next match-up has the team returning home on Saturday, September 13 to host Towson at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
The Panthers had the advantage in shots, out-shooting the young Lancer squad 18-5, while also having the advantage in corners 7-2. Helmick came up with four big saves for Longwood, making two in the first half, one in the second half and one in the first overtime period. The Lancer defense played a superb game keeping the High Point front runners in check, catching them offsides 11 times.
"It was a fair result," said head coach
Jon Atkinson. "We didn't come out strong in the first half, but had a much better second half. High Point out-shot us but really both teams only really had two good looks. Our best chance came from
Harvey Headley but unfortunately he wasn't able to find the net."
Senior
Adam Kotchin/North Hanover, N.J. (Hun School of Princeton) had an opportunity to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage in the 47th minute, but missed wide. The Lancers had three more scoring opportunities in the second half of action but were unable to put the ball on frame. Sophomore
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) nearly sealed the game in the 98th minute, cracking a shot that ended up being blocked.
“Overtime could have gone either way, but we're happy with a solid 0-0 result,” said Atkinson.
