COMPLETE RESULTS

CENTREVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men's cross country totaled 288 points to finish 11th among 16 teams Saturday at the Mason Invitational hosted by George Mason University at Bull Run State Park in Centreville.  The University of Virginia won the event with its 19 points, while the Cavaliers' Emil Heineking won the individual 8K race with his time of 24:40.  The Lancers will compete again on Friday, October 17, at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

In Centreville, Longwood was led by senior Evan Kearney/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) with his time of 26:29 to place 44th among the 140 runners.  Kearney was followed by classmate Matt Gordon/Annandale (Bishop Ireton) (27:03, 63rd), along with freshmen Darren Simpson/Crewe (FUMA) (27:24, 76th), Justin Cooke/Chesterfield (Manchester) (27:31, 82nd), and Alex Strittmater/Haymarket (Battlefield) (27:35, 84th).  Kearney (1:34), Gordon (0:41), Simpson (0:46), Cooke (1:04), and Strittmater (1:12) each ran new season-best times for the 8K distance.  It was a new career-best time for Kearney as well.

Also running for the Lancers was freshman Forrest Williams/Chesapeake (Hickory) (29:42, 131st), who also ran a new season-best time (0:35) for the 8K.

"I am very pleased with the progress of the team today," said second-year head coach Catherine Hanson.  "They demonstrated strength from the volume we have done in training.  We will turn training up these next few weeks as we prepare for our IC4A Championships on November 22, which we use as our 'conference' championship."
