The top award winners were senior softball standout Briana Wells|Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) and junior men’s basketball standout Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg), named the school’s female and male Athletes of the Year, respectively. Wells won the award for the second-straight year, while senior women’s soccer team member Lauren Trizna|Manassas (Osbourn Park) was presented with the school’s Jimmy Yarbrough Inspiration Award.
Female Athlete of the Year: Briana Wells, a left-handed pitcher, has started 39 of 43 games this spring and leads Longwood (32-11) with her 29-11 pitching record. She adds a 2.23 earned run average, a school-record 28 complete games, six shutouts, a school-record 257.0 innings, a career-best 170 strikeouts, and one no-hitter. Wells adds three home runs, four doubles, nine runs scored, and 14 RBI at the plate. She ranked fourth in Division I wins in the most-recent NCAA statistical rankings posted April 19. Wells has a career record of 91-46 with a 2.57 ERA, 156 appearances, 130 starts, 86 complete games, 22 shutouts, five saves, 849.0 innings, and 539 strikeouts -- all school records. Briana majors in mathematics with a minor in business, and is the daughter of Shane and Denise Wells of Romoland, California.
Male Athlete of the Year: Antwan Carter, a 6-6 center, started all 31 games this year while averaging 18.2 points and 9.5 rebounds. He shot 57.2% (237-414) from the field, 24.3% (9-37) on three-point field goals, and 68.3% (82-120) at the free throw line while adding 28 steals and 23 blocks for the Lancers (12-19). Antwan majors in communication studies, with a concentration in mass media, and is the son of Lawanda Smith and Gene Carter of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Jimmy Yarbrough Inspiration Award: Lauren Trizna, according to her coaching staff, has impacted the women’s soccer program on and off the field like no other: every day that Lauren has been on our campus, she has been a great person, a great teammate, and a great leader; every minute she was on the soccer field she continued to get better. A recruited walk-on, she has outworked most strictly by investing sweat, tears, and pouring her heart into the team and university. Trizna is part of a very elite group of people who have accomplished so much, and against the many obstacles associated with being a quadruplet. A defender, she started all 19 matches for Longwood (11-8) last fall with four goals (two game-winners) for eight points while the anchor of a defense that posted nine shutouts. Lauren majors in business administration, with a concentration in marketing, and is the daughter of Janis and Mike Trizna of Manassas.
Another highlight to the evening was the announcement of
