FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University announced its annual student-athlete award winners at the school’s Athletics Awards Banquet Monday night in Farmville. The top award winners for 2007-08 are senior baseball standout Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) and senior softball standout Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty), named the school’s male and female Athletes of the Year, respectively. Washington is a repeat winner as she claimed the award a year ago as well. Longwood is near completion of it first year of competition as an official member of Division I.
von Gersdorff, a first baseman/right fielder, has started 33 of 35 games for the baseball team (20-18) while batting .305 and leading the team in RBI (34), triples (2), stolen base percentage (1.000, 5-5), and multi-RBI games (9). His other stats include runs (11), hits (36), home runs (3), doubles (5), slugging percentage (.458), on-base percentage (.328), multi-hit games (9), and a .981 fielding percentage while leading the team in fielding chances (209) and putouts (185). von Gersdorff has started 136 of 167 career games with a .275 career batting average, including eight home runs and 72 RBI. He also was awarded the Male Henry I. Willett Scholar-Athlete Award. Nick is a business administration major with a 3.724 GPA, and the son of Richard and Margaret von Gersdorff of Purcellville.
Washington, a shortstop, has started all 43 games for the softball team (27-16) while batting a team-best .357 and also leading the team in runs (35), RBI (26), home runs (3), triples (2), total bases (61), stolen bases (23), slugging percentage (.530), on-base percentage (.457), and multi-RBI games (8). Her other stats include doubles (7), multi-hit games (9), and a .928 fielding percentage while leading the team in fielding chances (167) and assists (72). Washington has started all 179 of her career games with a .400 career batting average, including 26 home runs, 123 RBI, and 80 stolen bases; currently the all-time leader in hits (212) and runs (143). Ryan is a criminal justice major and the daughter of Daniel and Patricia Washington of Bealeton.
The keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Hank Kim ‘90, a former member of the men’s golf team and now principal consultant with The Altavista Group (management and information technology) in Chesterfield.
