FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University announced its annual student-athlete award winners at its 2008-09 Athletics Banquet Monday night in Farmville. The top award winners are redshirt-junior men’s basketball standout Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) and senior field hockey standout Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium), named the school’s male and female Athletes of the Year, respectively. Smith was presented with the school’s Jimmy Yarbrough Inspiration Award as well.
Smith, a team captain and 6-5 guard-forward, started 30 of 31 games this year while averaging career-bests of 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. He was the team leader in points, scoring average, field goals, free throws, free throw attempts, rebounds, rebound average, defensive rebounds, and blocks. Smith had career-highs of 26 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and five steals. He posted four 20-point games among 26 double-figure scoring games, five double-doubles, and led the team in both scoring and rebounding 11 times. Smith was named to Las Vegas Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in four games vs. West Virginia (11.20; 17p, 4r), Kentucky (11.24; 18p, 6r), Southeast Missouri State (11.28; 26p, 9r), and Delaware State (11.29; 18p, 8r). He ranked 65th in Division I field goal percentage (51.8), ranks seventh in career blocks (60) at Longwood, and was one of 12 finalists for the prestigious 2009 V Foundation Comeback Award. Dana already has a degree in sociology and is pursuing a second degree in business marketing, and is the son of Cheryl and Dana Smith of Woodbridge.
Binnewies, a midfielder, started all 22 games for the field hockey team that finished 10-12 while taking third-place at the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) Tournament. She was the team leader in goals (12), points (26), and game-winning goals (3) while adding two assists. Binnewies was the NorPac Offensive Player of the Year and 1st-Team All-NorPac (two-time NorPac Offensive Player of the Week) while earning NFHCA 2nd-Team All-South Region and NFHCA National Academic Squad honors. Carla majors in sociology and is the daughter of Henning and Margot Binnewies of Hamburg, Germany. Unfortunately, Carla could not attend the banquet and the award was accepted on her behalf by field hockey head coach Iain Byers.
