CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Longwood sophomore forward Youssef Shafei was named the Big South Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.  

 

Shafei earned the league's top weekly honor after leading the Lancers to a thrilling come-from-behind win at William & Mary, 6-5, in the season opener on Aug. 20. The Cairo, Egypt, native scored twice in the victory, including the game-winner with just 1:12 remaining. It marked Longwood's first win over the Tribe and the most goals in a road game in the program's Division I history. 

 

After W&M scored the game's first two goals, Shafei got the Lancers on the board in the 29th minute, finishing from 12 yards out on the right side. Longwood trailed 4-2 with 30 minutes remaining, before scoring four-straight goals to pull out the win. Schafei tallied what proved to be the game-winner with just 1:12 remaining, lifting a shot over the W&M goalkeeper from close range.   

 

Shafei and the Lancers open the home portion of their schedule today at 6 p.m. against Coastal Carolina. Longwood will also host Southern Virginia on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. as part of a two-match home week. Both contests will be broadcast on ESPN+.
