Lancer News and Notes
- The Lancers kicked off the 2026 campaign with a 6-5 win at William & Mary on Aug. 20. LU trailed by two goals on two different occasions and overcame the deficit on the strength of four second-half goals in a near 16-minute stretch. It was Longwood's first win over W&M in 12 tries. The six goals were the most for a Lancer team on the road in the program's Division I history. The six tallies were the second most in the country on the opening night of college soccer.
- Sophomore Youssef Shafei and junior
Joshwa Campbell both enjoyed strong debuts, scoring two times each. Shafei and Campbell were two of 23 players in the country with two goals on the opening night. Shafei opened the scoring for the Lancers in the 29th minute and capped it with the game-winner with just 1:12 remaining. Campbell scored twice on headers, pulling Longwood even at two in the first half, and then notching the team's first goal of the second half in the 74th minute to close the gap to 4-3.
- Senior
Mesfin Roda assisted on each of Longwood's first three goals of the night. His three assists not only lead the country but tied the school record for assists in a DI game.
- After leading the Lancers in scoring last season, junior
Brando Bedolla picked up right where he left off, posting a goal and two assists in the win at W&M. He found
Pau Garcia for the equalizer in the 82nd minute to knot the score at four. With just over three minutes remaining, he unleashed a shot with his right foot from the top of the 18-yard box to put the Lancers on top for good, 5-4.
- Monday's meeting with Coastal Carolina is the first between the programs since 2015. The Chanticleers won that contest, 2-1, in overtime in Farmville. Friday's game vs. Southern Virginia is Longwood's first against the Knights.
- Five Longwood players were named Big South Preseason Players To Watch. Senior
Aristhid Kamdjin and Bedolla were named to the preseason list for the second consecutive year, while Roda, senior
Ezrah Serralde, and sophomore
Benjamin Ferrero earned a spot this season. In total, 29 Big South players were recognized. Each team could select up to five players (regardless of position) to be included on the Watch List.
