Chapin Earns BMI Big South Graduate Fellowship

Longwood softball righty awarded $2,000 scholarship toward graduate studies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Longwood softball right-handed pitcher has been awarded the annual Bob McCloskey Insurance Big South Conference Graduate Fellowship, the league announced Monday.

The award, which is given by Bob McCloskey Insurance — a Big South Corporate Partner — is a $2,000 scholarship to Chapin for her graduate studies. The award will be given as part of the conference's annual Spring Awards Dinner Banquet on Thursday, May 28, at the Westin Resort in Hilton Head, S.C.

Chapin went 13-13 with a 3.65 ERA in 35 appearances and a career-high 172 2/3 innings as a senior. She led the Big South in strikeouts with 185, after being named Preseason All-Big South, Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week March 10 and Big South Pitcher of the Week on April 13. She also picked All-Big South honorable mention honors and was named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year at season's end, a first in Longwood softball history.

A native of Shawnee, Kan., Chapin earned 42 wins over four seasons, finishing her career with the fifth most career strikeouts at Longwood (473), ninth most innings pitched (549) and ninth most wins.

In the classroom, Chapin graduated with a 3.951 GPA in biology, and she will go into graduate school for a three-year doctor of veterinary medicine program at Kansas State.

At Longwood, Chapin gained hands-on experience through a microbiology quality control internship with TriRx and multiple veterinary externships and shadowing opportunities working with both small and large animals. Chapin was actively involved in community service, providing pitching lessons, volunteering with Longwood Life to support individuals with intellectual disabilities and completing an 80-hour study abroad service experience in Thailand focused on animal welfare.  Additionally, she contributed to research projects in cell biology, ecology, genetics, and organic chemistry while presenting her work at university showcases.
