CLINTON, S.C. – Isabella McCullough came up clutch in goal for Longwood lacrosse, and the defense was its usual feisty self.
Longwood (3-8, 2-3 Big South) forced 22 turnovers behind the efforts of
Lily Stohlman,
Zenie Newsom,
Sienna Huffman and company, and McCullough tallied 14 saves when Presbyterian finally got through to shoot.Â
Â
That was enough, coupled with multi-goal efforts from
Ava Bower,
Madison Rogers and
Jordan Fitzgerald, to give Longwood a critical 10-7 road win at Presbyterian (4-10, 1-4 Big South)

Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Longwood opened the game strong, scoring the first three goals, and it set the stage for the Lancers to lead wire-to-wire.
Â
Fitzgerald gave Longwood a 1-0 lead less than three minutes in, and, after
Bailey Stratton added one of her own, Fitzgerald put home a free position shot for her second of the game for a 3-0 lead.
Â
While PC (4-10, 1-4 Big South) cut it to 3-2,
Alexandra Hirst scored with 15 seconds left in the quarter off a feed from Rogers for a 4-2 lead.
Â
The two sides traded blows in the second quarter, with each team scoring twice, but it was the defenses that reigned supreme. Rogers scored her first of the game, and
Kendra DeFilippo added one as well while assisting on the goal from Rogers as Longwood took a 6-4 lead into the half. DeFilippo had a trio of assists in the contest.
Â
Again in the third, the two teams traded body blows back and forth. Rogers scored her second goal of the game, and
Mikaela Cook added one off a feed from Bower, who had a career high with three points on the day. Cook's goal gave Longwood an 8-6 lead heading to the fourth.
Â
Bower then scored both goals in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win for Longwood.
Â
Meanwhile, McCullough (3-8) made five of her 14 saves in the final period to keep Presbyterian at bay. It marked the fourth time this season she has made at least 10 saves in a game.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"That was a classic Big South game," said Longwood Head Coach
Dwayne Hicks. "Close and hard fought. I'm proud of the team because we had to play all 60 minutes, and they did. The defense did everything they had to do, and the offense had moments of great lacrosse. This is what we've been working for all year."
