CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Longwood second baseman Lauren Faulkner has been named Big South Freshman of the Week in softball, the league announced Monday.
Faulkner batted .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles, one home run, six RBIs and a team-best 10 runs scored in a 6-1 week for the Lancers which included going 6-0 in their home Bank of the James invitational against Youngstown State, Mount St. Mary's, Hampton and Penn. She hit safety in all six games of the tournament, posting two-hit outings against Hampton and Penn Saturday. The Holly Springs, N.C.. native Also scored in each game of the tournament.
She hit her second homer of the season — a three-run blast — in the Lancers' 8-0 win versus the Mountaineers on Friday.
In 20 games played and started this season, Faulkner is hitting .239 with 14 runs scored, two doubles and eight RBIs and a team-leading six stolen bases.
The Lancers (8-12) return to action Thursday to begin their third and final home tournament of the year, the Longwood Spring Break Classic, with a single game against Youngstown State at 5 p.m. Longwood and the Penguins will play three times in the event which also features games with Le Moyne and Lafayette.
