Lancers Post Come from Behind Wins to Top Hampton, Penn Saturday

Longwood moves to 4-0 in Bank of the James Invitational

FARMVILLE, Va. — Maggie Hiatt lined a two-run single into center field with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, completing a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Hampton, on the second day of the Bank of the James Invitational Saturday.

Longwood followed that with a 6-4 victory over Pennsylvania to move to 4-0 in its second home tournament of the season and 6-12 overall.

"Lots of grit and fight today. The adversity of this game shows you what you are made of and what you can overcome," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Lots of lessons today. Need to keep growing. Too much work to do to settle."

Down, 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth against Hampton, Bailey Bucholz singled to shortstop start the frame and was sacrificed to second by Sophia Pisacano. After a groundout,  Avery Miller singled through the right side to plate Bucholz and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Longwood tied it in the bottom of the seventh as Lauren Faulkner led off with a double down the line and moved to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Pisacano hit one to the right side of the infield and Faulkner came home to tie the game.

After Hampton's tiebreaker runner scored in the top of the eighth, Longwood loaded the bases with one out and Ava Abromavage on second. Brooke Bennett singled and Brooke Masingale, who got her team on the board in the first inning with her second homer of the season,  walked, setting the stage for Hiatt's game-ending hit.

Morgan Strickland earned the win out of the bullpen, getting the final out of the top of the eighth after Mallory Sanders went 6 1/3 innings in relief of Cierra Gawryluk, who got the start. Sanders came up with the longest outing of her career, surrendering four hits and one unearned run with 10 strikeouts.

McKenzie Rimmer-Jones took the loss for the Pirates in 5 1/3 innings. She gave up four runs on five hits.

Against Penn, Longwood scored three in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth and held off a late charge from the Quakers in the seventh for the win.

Sophia Knock drove in a season-high four runs with a two-run single in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Masingale tied the game in the earlier in the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field after Penn's Gigi Ganje led off the game with a home run to left field off of Maggie Chapin.

After Knock's double in the sixth made it 5-2, Pisacano added a sac fly to center fir a four-run lead.

Dani Freer responded with a solo homer in the seventh and Ganje singled to center to score Jaz Johnson.

That, though, was as close as the Quakers got as Chapin struck out three of the final four hitters to seal the win.

Chapin improved to 3-6, striking out 13 and yielding a single walk. She scattered eight hits and four runs.

The Lancers close the weekend Sunday, facing Hampton at 3 and Mount St. Mary's at 5 p.m.
