FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood pitcher Jackson Garland earned his first Big South Honor of his career and the third honor of the season for the Lancers, the Big South Conference office announced today.
The pitcher was named Freshman of the week after two impressive relief appearances over a four-game series against Youngstown State.
Over the series, Garland held the Penguins scoreless for 5.1 innings while giving up only two hits and holding batters to a .111 batting average.
Garland pitched for 1.2 innings in the second game of the series against YSU, stepping on the mound in the seventh. He retired five straight before exiting, and he struck out one in the outing.
In the series finale, Garland came on in relief in the fourth inning with Longwood down two runs and proceeded to put up 3.2 scoreless frames. The freshman righty struck out six while giving up only two hits without a walk to earn the relief win as the Lancers rallied late.
Longwood hits the road for a mid-week matchup at Richmond on Mar. 2 at 1:30 p.m. This game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
