HARRISONVILLE, Va- Longwood field hockey played tough, but 18
th ranked James Madison was too much on Friday night.
Â
The Dukes (7-3, 2-0 MAC) used a trio of early goals to keep Longwood (2-7, 0-2 MAC) from finding purchase in the match and win 5-0.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
James Madison, which came in 18
th in the polls off a 3-1 win over Michigan on Sunday, got off to a hot start.
Â
Julie Narleski found the back of the goal off an assist by Skyler Brown less than two minutes into the match. Four minutes later, Alice Roeper put home a penalty stroke, and Brown made it 3-0 with a goal of her own to end the first quarter.
Â
The Lancer defense was able to slow things down thereafter, but JMU's Madelief Molier made it 4-0 early in the quarter before Longwood goalkeeper
Sophie Mooldijk stemmed the tide with four saves before the half. She finished with nine on the day.
Longwood played its best in the fourth quarter, holding JMU scoreless and creating some opportunities forward. However, the damage had been done after the fast start by the home side.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"JMU is a very fast and scrappy team," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "That approach is threatening on their attack, and they utilized it will today. We lacked the ability to start strong and play our game the whole time. I am proud of the fourth quarter. We had some great attacking chances and played together."
Â
UP NEXT:
