HOW IT HAPPENED:

The two teams eased into the match through the first quarter, but Longwood found its rhythm in the second.

The Lancers ripped off seven shots in the quarter and also earned five penalty corners, but the chances refused to go home.

Longwood stayed in attack mode after halftime, and it finally paid off. Maria Papas slipped a ball through multiple defenders to Hailey Flick, who played it to Johnson from point blank range. Johnson banged it home in the 34th minute for the 1-0 lead. It was her fourth goal of the season and third in the past two games.

William & Mary (1-5) picked up the pace thereafter, but the Lancer defense fended off three penalty corners in the quarter and one early in the fourth to help keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

Sophie Mooldijk made four saves to earn the win for Longwood in the cage while Alexandra de Jesus took the loss despite eight saves for William & Mary.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Today was a great team win," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "I was really proud of the connections in our attack and that we were able to get more shots. We also were more structured helping defensively. It was great to finally reward ourselves and finish with a win."
