Field Hockey Falls in OT Heartbreaker to Ball State

OT Goal Stymies Longwood's Fourth Quarter Comeback

FARMVILLE, Va. – Channy Johnson led a surge for Longwood field hockey in the fourth quarter, but Ball State squeezed past the Lancers 4-3 behind an overtime winner from Grace Clokie.

Clokie's tight-angled shot nullified a two-goal effort by Johnson that was her first collegiate multi-goal game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood (1-6, 0-1 MAC) created chances in the first quarter, and Johnson smacked home a bouncing ball from Jane Ramsay for a 1-0 led in the 12th minute.

However, Ball State (3-5, 1-0 MAC) answered with a pair of penalty corner goals in the second from Jessica Rochat and Ellie Francois to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals added one in the third off a deflection from Julia Varratti for a multi-goal lead, but Longwood wasn't done.

The Lancers dominated the early stages of the fourth quarter while hunting for goals. Ultimately, Molly Rothenberger poked the ball away from BSU's Emma van Hal, and a quick sequence of passes ended up at Johnson's stick. She didn't miss from 10 years to cut it to 3-2.

Longwood wasn't done either, as the team earned multiple penalty corners before Zoe Tierney tied it up. Rothenberger played it straight to Tierney on the corner, and she hammered it in to make it 3-3.

While Ball State created a few chances of its own after that, Sophie Mooldijk made four saves to keep the score level at three and force overtime.

In overtime, the pace slowed, and van Hal found Clokie along the end line. Clokie slipped the shot in the smallest of windows to send the visitors away with the win.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We started and finished strong," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "We played really well together moving the ball up the field and dropping defensively. We need to find a way to be more consistent and play four quarters of good hockey. I was proud of hte comeback and the fight to give ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter."
