FARMVILLE, Va. – Carter Newman swatted a home run for Longwood, but Winthrop used early and late runs, and a sterling start from Owen Sarna, to win the series finale 15-2 on Sunday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Sarna struck out a career best 11 for the Eagles (25-21, 11-7 Big South) while tossing 6.2 innings of two-run ball.
His offense gave him all the runs he needed in the first before adding insurance late, and Nick Chronis capped off a fantastic series with four RBI on the day.
Newman hit a two-run home run for Longwood, his second homer of the year, to lead the Lancer offense, and
Mac Tufts also had multiple base hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Winthrop struck first in the first inning when the first three batters of the game reached safely. Chronis drove in one, and two others came home on a wild pitch.
However, Longwood starter
Ried Dittner settled down from there and put up three straight zeros to keep the Lancers hanging around.
Sarna, though, was better. He only gave up two singles, both to Tufts, in the first six innings. His defense erased Tufts both times, and Sarna only had to face the minimum through the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Winthrop offense extended the lead to 7-0 with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Longwood got on the board in the seventh when
Mikey Urbaniak led off with a single, and Newman belted him home with a homer to left field that cut it to 7-2.
From that point on though, the Winthrop bullpen did its job and didn't give up a run.
Sarna (3-3) got the win with his 11 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He gave up two runs, both earned, on four hits and one walk.
Dittner (2-4) took the loss for the Lancers. He gave up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four in 5.0+ innings after pitching into the sixth.
UP NEXT:
Longwood hits the road to open a five-game road swing. The road trip begins at Elon on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. The game will air on FloSports.
