Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Outlasted By Elon, Falls 10-9

Lancers Compile 10 Hits, Draw Nine Walks, But Elon Plates Pair of Runs Late

ELON, N.C. – Longwood baseball went back and forth with Elon on Wednesday night, and four Lancers had multiple hits while the team also drew nine walks.

However, two runs by Elon (20-24) in the eighth inning lifted the Phoenix past the Lancers (10-35) 10-9.

Mikey Urbaniak, Carter Newman, Myles Webb and Jayson Nash all had two hits apiece for a Longwood offense that plated nine runs on 10 hits.

But Elon used a four-hit day from Jackson Alford and three hits apiece from Tank Yaghoubi and Kenny Mallory, Jr. to nip the Lancers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Elon staked itself to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Lancers worked the offense in the third for their rebuttal.

Newman opened the scoring with an RBI single, and the Lancers were on the move. Webb, Jae'dan Carter, James Nelson, Tre Keels, Mac Tufts and Nash all drew walks in the frame, and a mix of the walks and a passed ball and a wild pitch sent five more Lancers home to take a 6-3 lead.

Mallory, Jr. answered for Elon with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lancers bounced right back in the fourth.

Webb doubled home Newman, and Carter added an RBI singled for a 8-5 lead.

Elon then used an RBI triple from Yaghoubi as part of a two-run bottom half that pulled the Phoenix within one again, but Nelson put Longwood back up by two runs with an RBI single in the sixth.

Elon's Will Vergantino cut it to 9-8 in the bottom half of the sixth, and the Phoenix loaded the bases in the eighth. Charlie Granatell tied the game with an infield single that plated one, and Mallory, Jr. hit an RBI fielder's choice that gave his side the 10-9 lead.

Nash doubled with two outs in the ninth to put the tying run on base, but Elon's Sam Nomura evaded the timely run-scoring hit to preserve the win.

Nomura (1) got the save by pitching the scoreless ninth, although he gave up two hits against one strikeout. Itai Spinoza (1-3) picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless relief innings. He struck out three.

Joe Castrichini took the loss for Longwood. He was charged with both runs in the eighth.
