Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva has been Co-Big South Newcomer of the Year, leading a group of four Longwood men's tennis players on the 2025 All-Big South Team, the league announced Wednesday.
Gonzalez Paiva becomes the Lancers' first-ever major Big South award winner in men's or women's tennis. Joining Gonzalez Paiva, who is also part of the first-team doubles and second-team singles squads, is junior
Timéo Puech (first-team singles and doubles) as well as junior
Alejandro Uribe and freshman
Marko Mrdak (first-team doubles).
Gonzalez Paiva is also Longwood's representative on the Big South All-Academic Team with a 3.783 GPA in business administration.
Gonzalez Paiva went 15-16 in singles overall in all competition. He was was 7-10 in dual action and 5-3 at No. 3 singles. Gonzalez Paiva was a team-leading 14-9 in doubles play, including finishing 8-4 in spring duals and 8-3 from the top doubles flight. Gonzalez Paiva was named Big South Player of the Week on March 26, playing to a perfect 4-0 record as the Lancers topped George Mason and Howard.
Puech earned his second first-team singles nod in as many years while being part of the first team in doubles this season for the first time after earning second-team doubles recognition in 2024. Puech is a team-leading 20-9 in singles action this season, including going 11-4 in duals, all from the top spot. He is 15-6 in doubles play, going 8-4 in duals.
Puech was named Big South Player of the Week this season on Feb. 12.
The doubles pair of Uribe and Mrdak combined for a 4-5 record at the No. 3 position, including victories over No. 1 Wake Forest, George Mason, William & Mary and Howard.
Mrdak was twice named Big South Freshman of the Week on March 26 and April 2.
Longwood (7-10, 1-2) earned the No. 3 seed in the Big South championship and will face second-seeded UNC Asheville in the semifinals Thursday at 2 p.m., in Lexington, S.C.
