Men’s Tennis Battles UNC Asheville in Home Finale, Falling, 5-2

Teams to meet again in Big South Championship Semifinals Thursday

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to UNC Asheville on Sunday at the New Lancer Courts.

The two teams will rematch in the Big South championship semifinals on Thursday at 2 p.m., at the Lexington County Tennis Complex in Lexington, S.C., with Longwood drawing the No. 3 seed.

On Sunday, UNC Asheville clinched the doubles point after the teams split matches on courts two and one, respectively. First, Olle Sonesson Lidholt and Tarek Erlewein topped Petar Belosevic and Petter Lindquist, 6-1, before Timéo Puech and Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva defeated Cian Ingles and Freddy Murray by the same score.

Sai Gandepalli and Griffin Lovern then beat Marko Mrdak and Alejandro Uribe, 6-4, at No. 3 for the early lead in the dual.

In singles, Erlewein defeated Belosevic on court two, 6-2, 6-0, to make it 2-0. Gandepalli beat Uribe, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 to push it a 3-0 lead for the Bulldogs.

Puech then won by retirement over Murray, winning the first set, 6-3, earning the victory as Murray could not continue at 3-0 in the second set.

Asheville's Trevor Gray clinched the match for the Bulldogs, beating Ian Perl, 6-1. 6-4, at No. 6.

Gonzalez Paiva earned the Lancers' second win by retirement of the day over Sonesson Lidholt at No. 3. Gonzalez Paiva was up, 7-6, in the first set before Sonesson Lidholt bowed out for injury.

Ingles closed the match with a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (1) victory at No. 5 over Lindquist.

Longwood celebrated its seniors -- Gonzalez Paiva and graduate assistant coach Garbe Fajardo -- prior to the match .

Longwood fell to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in the Big South with the loss while UNC Asheville improved to 11-8, 2-1.
