Radford Takes Rubber Game from Lancers, 5-4, in Extras

Hiatt homers twice, Guy once in defeat

RADFORD, Va. — The Longwood softball team blasted three home runs, getting two off the bat of sophomore Maggie Hiatt at Radford on Sunday, but fell, 5-4, in nine innings.

Hiatt collected her team-leading seventh and eighth homers of the season going for a second career two-jack game.

"These are the types of losses that present life choices," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Do you decide to do the work that it takes to win games like this down the stretch or do you accept [the outcome]?"

Hiatt's first of the day — a solo shot to center field with two out in the top of the first inning — came on the front end of back-to-back homers in that frame. Redshirt sophomore Maryanna Guy then belted her fourth of the season to right field to stake Longwood to a 2-0 lead.

Radford's Abby Bossler knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double to center that scored Grace Bechtol and Rachel Smith.

Hiatt put the Lancers back on top with a mammoth two-run shot down the line in left field line with one out in the top of the fifth. Brooke Bennett, who had walked, scored ahead of Hiatt.

Smith launched a two-run homer of her own to right center in bottom of the inning off of Morgan Strickland to tie the game once again.

That's the way it stayed until Kelley Feigen singled off the glove of pitcher Maggie Chapin after Chapin had struck out the first two hitters in the inning. Bechtol followed, lining a double to the gap in left center, chasing Feigen home from first for the win.

Radford (24-20, 9-3 Big South) earned its first-ever series win over Longwood (13-24, 7-5) with the win.

Dakota Redmon (14-6) went all nine innings in the circle for the Highlanders, scattering seven hits and four earned runs with eight strikeouts and five walks. She threw 174 pitches.

Chapin fell to 7-11 on the season, yielding four hits, one run and two walks. She fanned five. Strickland lasted 4 1/3 innings in the start and Cierra Gawryluk tossed two innings with three strikeouts.

Hiatt was 2-for-4 with the two homers, a walk and three RBIs while Guy went 3-for-4 with the homer and a run scored.Smith and Bossier each drove in a pair of runs for the Highlanders.

Longwood returns to action Tuesday at NC State in a 4 p.m., doubleheader in Raleigh, N.C., both games will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
