Lancers Knock Off NC State State, 1-0; Split Midweek Twinbill

Guy hits seventh-inning homer, Burton throws two-hit shutout

RALEIGH, N.C. — Redshirt sophomore Maryanna Guy hammered the first pitch of the top of the seventh inning over the fence in left field and senior right-hander Er'ron Burton twirled a two-hit, complete-game shutout as the Longwood softball team topped NC State, 1-0, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Dail Softball Stadium Tuesday.

Guy's fifth home run of the season gave Longwood its sixth win over a Power 4 school in the five-year tenure of head coach Dr. Megan Brown and sent the Wolfpack to their 11th consecutive loss.

"One of the important lessons for teams to learn is how to win 1-0 games," Brown said. "Very proud of our young ladies for staying in the game, continuing to make adjustments and fighting as one. They have walked through fire this year and are stronger for the journey. Could not be more proud of these young women."

Burton (2-3) worked her way out of several tight spots, but did not allow an NC State runner to reach third base in the game. She struck out two and walked three in throwing 99 pitches for her third complete game of the season.

The Wolfpack offense stranded seven baserunners, was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and hitless in seven chances with two outs.

Rylee Wyman (5-6) took the loss for NC State in the circle, going 6 1/3 innings, while surrendering the Guy homer. She allowed three hits and fanned five, using 77 pitches.

NC State (22-22) rebounded with three home runs in game two for a 7-0 win. Tori Ensley and Kendall Simmers hit three-run shots to left and left-center field in the first and second innings, respectively, to stake the Wolfpack to an early 6-0 lead. Taryn Massey added a homer to left of her own in the bottom of the fifth for the final margin.

Carly Maxton (10-8) yielded just a seventh-inning single to Guy. She struck out the first six Lancers she faced and finished the night with 12 punchouts.

Longwood (14-25) is back home to face Charleston Southern in a key three-game Big South Conference series starting Friday with a 3 p.m., doubleheader. Prior to the first game, Lancer Field will be officially dedicated as Bank of the James Park in a pregame ceremony.
