SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Longwood women's tennis team began play in the Big Southern Shootout at Wofford's Reeves Tennis Center on Friday.
The Lancers played singles against Chattanooga and doubles versus the host Terriers on the first day of the event.
The doubles pair of Oriana Izarra and Hima Fernando defeated Grace Agster and Chloe Elliott, 6-4, for Longwood's only victory on the day.
Freshman Bali Song took her singles match with the Mocs' Savannah Presson to three sets. Song won the second set, 6-4 to force a deciding third. Presson, who took the first set, 6-4, won the third, 10-7.
Fernando, another freshman, fell in 7-6 (2) in a first-set tiebreak against Emma Pedretti before dropping the second set, 6-4.
Izarra also went three sets with Zara Burns, winning the first set, 6-1. Burns won the next two, 6-4 and 10-8.
Elsewhere, Rufaro Magarira defeated Alexandra Magia, 6-3, 6-2 and Addison Iacono topped Feline van Eijkelenburg, 6-2, 6-3.
Ella Mancuso and Jordan Fenton each also beat their opponents Alexis Broderick and Nicole Di Bisceglia, respectively, in straight sets.
Wofford's Ella Suk and Quinn Bernthal defeated Song and van Eijkelenburg, 6-4, in doubles action, while Grace Stout and Katie Godfree topped Magia and Di Bisceglia, 6-3.
The tournament continues Saturday at 9 a.m., when Longwood takes on Middle Tennessee in doubles and Wofford in singles.
