BLACKSBURG, Va. — Freshman Hima Fernando won her consolation draw singles match Thursday to lead the Longwood women's tennis team on the first day of the 2025 ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech.
Fernando outlasted Anna Barlini from Mount St. Mary's, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, for the victory.
Earlier in the day, Fernando fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Thalia Smith of Marshall.
Junior Feline van Eijkelenburg also dropped a three-set match to Maya Bayat from George Mason, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
On Friday, freshman Bali Song, who received automatic qualification to the singles main draw, takes on Marina Markina of Old Dominion. Song and van Eijkelenburg play Maryland's Diya Challa and Magdalena Baniak, as well. Day two action begins at 9 a.m.
The two finalists in the singles main draw and the doubles champions earn bids to the NCAA Individual Championships, which will be held in Lake Nona, Fla., at the USTA National Campus on Nov. 18-23.
