MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Zoe Tierney buried a goal in the back of the goal in overtime Friday afternoon to give Longwood its first conference win on the season. The Lancers (3-2, 1-0 MAC) fought back after allowing a late goal to top the Chippewas (3-5, 0-1 MAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood got out to an early 1-0 lead, when Jane Ramsay put her first goal as a Lancer in the back of the net three minutes into the match. She scored on a penalty corner in the fourth minute.
The two teams from there would go back and forth with opportunities, but neither was able to capitalize.
Longwood created four shots in the second quarter, but Central Michigan countered with a pair of penalty corners. However, the Lancer back line, along with freshman goalie Sophie Mooldijk, kept a clean sheet through 30 minutes.
CMU pushed hard in the third, but the Lancers held them off going into the fourth.
Finally, the Chippewas found a way to even the score in the fourth. With less than two minutes to play, Pauline Klep tied the match on a penalty corner.
Longwood responded with resilience and took control in overtime. In the 64th minutes, Hunter-Paige Johnson drove up the right side and drew a corner.
She inserted the ball on the corner to Zoe Tierney, and Tierney deposited her third goal of the season to give Longwood the win.
Mooldijk was again strong in goal for the Lancers. The freshman tied her career best with seven saves on the day, none bigger than the 62nd minute when she saved a potential winning goal to keep the game alive for the Lancers.Â
