Farmville, Va. - Longwood fell at home Sunday afternoon to nationally ranked Syracuse 4-0. The 15th-ranked Orange (5-2) capitalized on 15 corners to take down the Lancers (3-3) in a non-conference match up.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood stood strong in the first quarter, holding Syracuse scoreless with a disciplined, controlled approach that turned aside five penalty corners.
Syracuse finally broke through in the second quarter when Bo van Kempen received a give and go with teammate Berber Bakermans to put the Orange in front on a penalty corner.
Longwood had a a great opportunity late in the second quarter to even the score, but the deflection on a corner went just wide.
With less than five seconds to go in the half, Vivian Rowan pounced on a rebound to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Orange added two more in the second half to eventually take the Lancers down 4-0.
Freshman Sophie Mooldijk continued to help the Lancers in the goal once again Sunday afternoon, registering a career high 13 saves.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Syracuse is a really strong opponent that plays fast and has great individual skilled players," Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg stated. "I thought we played well the first two quarters, and struggled a little in the second half giving up corners, but overall I was happy with the way our girls handled today's challenge."
