Warunek Chosen by Phillies in 2024 MLB Draft

Left-hander selected in the 2024 draft Tuesday

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Longwood junior left-handed pitcher Kevin Warunek was selected in the 18th round of the 2024 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 552nd overall pick on Tuesday.

Warunek went 2-0 in 12 games out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.08 ERA in 21 2/3 innings pitched with 25 strikeouts. 

His longest outing came against Iona on Feb. 24 when he threw three innings, striking out four. He picked up his first win on the season against Presbyterian on March 24 going two innings while fanning four more to close the door on the Blue Hose on his way to being named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week.

In his freshman campaign he was a weekend started before becoming a valuable arm for the Lancers out of the bullpen his final two seasons.

He pitched to a 7-4 record with a 4.97 ERA in his career with Longwood over 38 appearances and 87 innings. Warunek fanned 60 batters.

Major League teams have until Aug.1 to sign 2024 draft selections.
