Late Rally Dooms Lancers Against Charleston Southern

Longwood Takes Eighth-Inning Lead, but CSU Answers in Ninth to Win 12-8

Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – Friday night featured dueling rallies between Charleston Southern and Longwood baseball at Buddy Bolding Stadium. Unfortunately for the Lancers (13-17, 2-5 Big South), Charleston Southern (13-17, 5-2 Big South) had the last one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both sides were a little sluggish in the field to start, and the offenses capitalized on the opportunities.

Charleston Southern scored five runs in the first two innings, keying on a pair of Lancer errors, but Longwood hung around thanks to two runs of their own.

CSU bumped the lead back to four runs in the sixth, but Longwood responded in the home half of the frame. Blagen Pado cranked an RBI double to start the scoring, and Willie Havens and Corbin McCloud added RBI base knocks of their own to trim the lead to 6-5.

Then, in the eighth, Longwood rallied again. This time, Keondre Shelton beat out a bunt on a safety squeeze to knot the score at six, and Hayden Harris roped a single to left to score two more for an 8-6 lead.

However, CSU loaded the bases in the ninth. After tying the game at eight all, Cade Conway was hit by a pitch to give CSU the lead for good. A Chandler Tuupo single two batters later capped the scoring for a 12-8 lead.

Evan Truitt (3-1) earned the win for Charleston Southern, despite giving up six earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 relief innings. Owen Simmons (1-3) took the loss for Longwood.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We always talk about the details mattering, and we had too many times where we didn't execute on the details," said Longwood Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "Our guys showed fight to get back into the game, but we have to be able to execute. We talk about it all the time, and it came back to bite us big time tonight."

UP NEXT:

Longwood takes on Charleston Southern in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
