Lancers Fall Late To Richmond 7-5

Longwood Battles, but Spiders Use Late Runs to Down Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood battled all night, stringing together tough at bats, but ultimately fell to Richmond 7-5 on Tuesday.

Richmond (12-16) got out of multiple situations to hold Longwood (13-16) and take the first meeting between the two this season.

TOP LWU PERFORMERS:
Andrew Potojecki: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 SO
Drew Camp: 3-4, 2 R,

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood and Richmond kept each other at a stalemate through three complete innings thanks to great starting pitching from both sides.

Andrew Potojecki was dominant in his outing, where he threw two innings and only allowed one hit while striking out two.

Vincent Coroso struck out four in 3.0 innings of work for the Spiders.

In the top half of the four the Spiders struck first thanks to an RBI triple from Jack Arcamone.

The Lancers would respond in the bottom half of the frame though. Drew Camp started the inning off with one of his three singles on the day. Tanner Thomas followed that up with a single to left field which knotted the game at one. Two pitches later Logan Janney crushed his second long ball of the season to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead.

Richmond would add a second run in the top half of the fifth to cut the deficit to one. After a quick bottom half of the fifth for the Lancers, Richmond would take the lead in the top half of the sixth. They plated three runs on three hits, to take a 5-3 lead.

From there, Longwood battled, but Richmond danced away from giving up the critical hit to the Lancers. Richmond managed to wiggle out of jams in the sixth, eighth and ninth.

In the ninth Richmond would shut the door on a Longwood comeback as Cole Hentschel got the final three outs to pick up his third save on the season for Richmond.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We have to find ways to execute down the stretch, and continue to learn how to make winning plays," said Longwood Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "Our guys battled tonight, and the dugout was filled with energy. We have to keep improving and working so that we can be where we want to at the end of this thing."

NOTABLES:

Logan Janney has now hit two homeruns in his last four games.

UP NEXT:

Longwood's second midweek game against George Mason has been postponed due to weather. The team will host Charleston Southern for a weekend series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
